Subdivisions of the Soviet Union

The Soviet Union had several kinds of subnational entities:

• Republics of the Soviet Union
• Autonomous republics of the Soviet Union
• Oblasts of the Soviet Union
• Autonomous oblasts of the Soviet Union
• Autonomous okrugs of the Soviet Union

In addition, some cities and regions, while located within subnational entities had special status:

• "Closed cities"
• a Republican subordination
• Oblast centers
